Adding Sounds to
Windows
(Currently we only provide information on adding sounds
to Windows 3.1 / 95 & 98.)
Adding Sounds to Microsoft Windows 3.1 / 95 / 98
You might want to print out these guidelines if you are not
familiar with adding or changing sounds on your computer.
- The following basic information should be
enough to set up sound files on your computer. However, if you
encounter any problems, you might want to check the Windows 'help'
files on your computer for more information.
Windows 3.1
- Download the Wav files into the 'Windows' directory.
(Normally C:\Windows)
- From the 'Main' screen, (or from the 'Windows'
menu in tool bar of the 'Program Manager' screen, select
'Main'.)
Double click on the 'Control Panel' icon
Double Click on the 'Sound' icon
A display box will appear.
The box on the right shows the sound files available. Your downloaded
sounds should appear here. Change to the correct directory if
the sound files do not appear.
The box on the left shows the Windows 'Events' that can
have a sound attached to them. Make your selection by clicking
to highlight an event on the left and then selecting a sound
file from the right to go with that event.
Ensure that the 'Enable System Sounds' box is checked
and then click on 'OK' when you have finished making you
selections.
Windows 95 & 98
- Download the Wav files into the 'Windows\Media' directory.
(Normally C:\Windows\Media) If no media subdirectory, load into
the Windows directory.
- Click on 'Start' and select 'Settings'and then
select 'control panel',
From 'Control Panel' select 'Sounds'.
A display box will appear.
In the 'Events' window, select the action you want to
change the sound of. You can preview the sound in the 'Preview'
area to hear what sound is currently being used.
In the 'Sound' section, browse for the sound you want
to apply to the 'Even' you highlighted in the 'Events'
window. Move to the Windows/Media directory if it doesn't automatically
open there, (or to the directory you saved your Wav files in.)
You can test your new sound selection in the 'Preview'
area.
If you wish you can save your new sound scheme in the 'Schemes'
window. Just give it a name and click on 'Select as..'
- Click OK when you are happy with all your changes.
